Need to find affordable, environmentally-friendly batteries for a bike or helmet blinky light, that are rechargeable too? I stumbled onto a nice set which includes 4 triple A's, 4 double A's and a charger for under $18 at the Roosevelt store. They come fully charged!

Remember the brand name? It sounds like an incredible deal, but rechargeables are one of those products where cheaper isn't always better. Proper rechargables have upwards of 2400 mAh capacity for AA's, and 900-1000 mAh for AAA's. Less capacity means you have to recharge them more often. Also, cheap chargers often don't have an overcharge protection. Overcharging can cause damage to your rechargeables. Found this all out the hard way. I personally use Energizer rechargeables. While not perfect, they provide a good performance for the price. A 4-pack of AA's can sometimes be found on sale at Jewel for $8

And while rechargeables are more environmentally friendly than disposable batteries, they need to be recycled separately. Look here for places in your neighborhood where you can recycle rechargeables
