The Chainlink

Yes, it's true-- they've merged into one band.

Seriously, just a heads-up for fans that:

1) Cameron Crowe's Pearl Jam documentary "Twenty" that could only be seen in a limited run for $16 a pop a few weeks ago will be airing on American Masters (Channel 11) tonight at 9

2) The Decemberists will be on Austin City Limits-- Channel 11, 12:04 A.M. Sunday Night.  So set your recording device of choice accordingly . . .

Channel 11 is so win for people without cable.  Thanks for the heads up!

I used to be a huge PJ fan in high school, and though I very rarely listen to them nowadays, I'd still like to see this for the sake of some good memories.

Top post edited-- Decemberists is Sunday night, not Saturday night.

"Twenty" reruns Saturday night from 12:30 to 3 A.M.

I bought a PJ album in the early 90s (Vitalogy when it came out) and have always liked them but didn't really follow for pretty much all of the naughts. My interest was rekindled when I saw Eddie on some tribute about 2 years ago (for Springsteen maybe) and I realized he's got a whole lot of productive musical life left in him.

Have since seen Eddie once (well, 3 times if you count walk-ons to other people's sets) and PJ twice . . .

Watch in 720p if you can:

Reminder-- Decemberists on Austin City Limits, tonight at midnight, channel 11.

Did anyone catch "twenty?" I thought it was top-notch.

I did and enjoyed it.  Lots of stuff I never knew about the band and great hi-def footage.

Caught 20 min of Decemberists.  Very Good.  Thanks for the heads up, and yes - WTTW is an excellent station.  Support Public Broadcasting!
I feel like just a bit of an idiot but I watched it completely through twice and I think I could probably sit through it twice more, at least.  It left me with a lot of questions, but I think if I were to pay to join that Pearl Jam fan site so I could participate in their crazy-active forum that would make me kind of obsessive, no?

I enjoyed 20 quite a bit, lots of insight particularly into the time before PJ with Mother Love Bone. An interesting perspective around how most bands start with success and often end in tragedy, and they were the opposite. If you liked the movie you may want to check out the companion book

I'm part of the obsessive fan club and forum as well, there is unfortunately a very low signal to noise ratio. It takes quite a bit to weed out the nonsense, moreso than most forums. Membership is useful around touring years since you do have access to presale tickets for both the band and occasionally their side projects as well.

Never was a member of the official forum, but I used to visit an unofficial fan board called Five Horizons pretty regularly.

No Code and Yield were the albums I especially connected with, and then when Riot Act came out I started falling off, partly due to discovering new bands.  So, there was a lot of stuff I missed in the time up until now and this doc filled in the gaps nicely.  The Mother Love Bone stuff was interesting.  I had never listened to them even when I was into PJ, so it was all pretty new to me.  It was really strange seeing all that footage of the band, especially EV.  I used to read articles and interviews and had this image in my mind built up of him, and so I kind of mythologized him.  This doc was nice because it mixed the fumbling, pretentious, embarrassing moments with the genuine ones.  Overall it was pretty fair I think.
