So I'm getting ready to build a tamdem back wheel. I've been pretty impressed by what I've heard/learned about Phil Wood Hubs, but Sam over at Rapid Transit turned me on to the Shimano HF08 over the weekend.

In trying to compare the two by checking things out on the internets, I came accrossed some neg info on phil wood hubs failing and that they arent as good as they used to be. That was rectified by their bullet proof life time garrentee, but I'd rather not have to deal with any of that if I can foresee an issue going into it.

Anybody have any thoughts on either hub?

I am sure you perused the tandem forum on bikeforums.net? There are some extremely knowledgeable posters on that forum that can point out the differences between the various hubs.
How about a DT Swiss 540 tandem hub? Sealed bearings, low maintenance, and so far it holds up to our anything-but-featherweight quite nicely.
