We are a Chicago-based bike organization on the Southwest side seeking a Bike Mechanic/Instructor to develop and teach a weekly bicycle mechanics workshop for our adult members. You will be instructing a group of three to eight students for three hours on Saturday morning over the course of six to eight weeks. The a comprehensive overview of bicycle mechanics including headsets,
bottom brackets, hubs, wheel truing, brakes, shifters and derailleurs
as well as finishing work and trouble shooting. This is a new
program so you'll collaborate with the current staff to establish the
syllabus for the class. Email and telephone correspondence with
students outside of class hours will also be involved.
This role has great potential for growth. Ideally it will come to encompass
monitoring volunteers that come to work on bikes outside of the class. This would involve helping people who possess different levels of mechanical knowledge with repairs and maintenance. You
would also be responsible for volunteer correspondence and coordination
for our shop, storefront, and other events and possibly working to
build our volunteer base.
We're looking for someone who is an active member of the cycling community,
is passionate about bike advocacy and is interested in growing with our
dynamic organization.
Requirements:
A minimum of two years experience as a professional mechanic.
Prior teaching experience.
Must be articulate, outgoing and personable.
Desirables
Prior experience with not-for-profits.
Formal training.
Experience coordinating people.
