Membership Concierge

 

Millennium Bike Station is looking for an outgoing, cycle-minded early riser to staff our bicycle commuter station. You will be the face of Chicago’s downtown biking community! Responsibilities will include organizing and updating membership information, recruiting and signing up new members, regular upkeep of facilities and promotions and other office duties as needed.

Qualified applicants should have previous clerical and health related work experience as well as excellent communication and phone skills.

Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook skills also a must.

Start time is 6am, Monday-Friday. Pay is 9/hr.

Re: Wal-Mart-- I think folks are missing the big picture.  The "Living Wage" ordinance was a device aimed specifically at keeping Wal-Mart out of the city and as such was crafted to focus on the pay rate, but it's only a small piece of the opposition to Wal-Mart.

when i was still in school in philadelphia, i started working retail, the overnight shift (i used to be an insomniac).  my starting pay was $8.50hr.  this was 11 years ago.  i left that part of retail at a wage of just under $17.00 just a few (maybe 5-6) yrs ago now.

 

i cant imagine i was the only one.

It's above minimum wage but after having challenges finding an apartment last year due to the fact I only work part time in a decent starting wage (though I have years of experience in my current field)  most Chicago aprtment rental companies want you to make 3 times the rent and $360 a week is barely making it.

 

This being so I' might put my name in for a prt time gig since the one I have now is flexible.

I had a deal a few years ago before the GM bailout, economic collapse that was $16 an hour BUT it was 7pm to 7am 3 12 hour days with a 1-2 hour drive each way.

Curious, what does everyone consider a liveable wage? I have been pondering this myself. How little could I live off of in Chicago?

Most of my clients claim to make very little money. A family of 2-5 often list making $10,000-20,000 a year. Given government aid I know they get a lot more than this. But I am unsure how they could manage this. Poverty line is near 10,000 in ill and most gov programs work with people 150%-250% of poverty line.

How much do you think you could live off of in chicago without government aid? Or even with it?

In what world does enjoying what you work on help get the bills paid?

My breaking point on acceptable pay, period, for an adult (for this example I consider an adult to be someone living on their own with no external support) at a full time job to be 10 bucks an hour.  In general I consider a wage below 10/hr to be unacceptable and the sign of a bad employer but that is just me.

This job posting sounds like an entry-level office job but pays as though it's entry-level retail.  The only group that could realistically take this kind of job is college students on their summer break.

 

For the kind of thing described (computer proficiency, recruiting, work experience), the starting wage should be around $12 an hour.  I don't think there's anything wrong with the job.  It just seems like the company has unrealistic expectations for the kind of employee they're looking to hire.

Living wage is dependent on the cost of living. Living wage in Lincoln Park would be higher than Humboldt Park given the cost of renting,owning...

Theory is if you like what you do you do it well,take pride in it and would be willing,able and want to do more of it thus equaling more money.

Now if you like your job and get taken advantage of that's called corporate greed.

My starting wage for THAT is $300 an hour, full benefits, a month of paid vacation every quarter.
