Mayor Announces Plans to Make the River Chicago's Second Shoreline
Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago focused public attention on the use and development of the lakefront shoreline and the Chicago River. Following suit, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has released plans to complete the Chicago Riverwalk. The completion of the Riverwalk will make the Chicago River the City's second waterfront, providing new economic and recreational opportunities for Chicago residents and visitors, achieving goal #15 of the Mayor's recently released environmental roadmap: Sustainable Chicago 2015.
Continuing along the south bank of the river, the Riverwalk will create new restaurant and retail space as well as more public seating and leisure areas. The plans include conceptual ideas for each of the six blocks from State Street west to Lake Street: The Marina (from State to Dearborn); The Cove (Dearborn to Clark); The River Theater (Clark to LaSalle); The Swimming Hole (LaSalle to Wells); The Jetty (Wells to Franklin) andThe Boardwalk (Franklin to Lake).

Chicago Unveils the "Greenest Street in America"
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) showed off its stewardship and innovation in green infrastructure design when unveiling the "greenest street in America". The first phase completion of a two-mile stretch of Blue Island Avenue and Cermak Road in the Pilsen neighborhood, "provides both mitigation and adaptation strategies by reducing its carbon footprint and integrating technologies that allow the infrastructure to address and adapt to climate change," said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein. The update to a more sustainable street is the beginning of the incorporation of standard green practices in all city operations, goal #21 in the Sustainable Chicago 2015roadmap.
Notable achievements of the project include:
- The first commercial roadway application of photocatalytic cement, which cleans the surface of the roadway and removes nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases from the surrounding air through a catalytic reaction driven by UV light.
- More than 60% of all construction waste was recycled. More than 23% of all new materials were sourced from recycled content.

Mayor Supports Bulk Energy Purchase on Behalf of Residents
Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced support for a referendum on the November 6th ballot that would allow the City to explore purchasing energy in bulk on behalf of Chicagoans. Through the municipal electricity aggregation, the City would pool residential and small commercial electricity accounts, negotiate lower electricity prices and secure innovative and clean energy sources.
"Municipal aggregation can potentially bring meaningful savings to Chicago ratepayers and small businesses through lower monthly electric bills, and can help us increase our investment in renewable, clean energy sources," said Mayor Emanuel.
In order to create the Aggregation Program, the City's residents must pass a referendum on November 6. For more information on the Program please click [here].
