The Chainlink

Dear Chicago Commuters: I'm about to start doing a 40 minute commute home around around 7 PM. I'm hoping to buy a more powerful white light, something in the 150-350 LED range -- any recommendations? I appreciate your thoughts - Thank you!

This has 200 LEDs.  Might fit on a Cetma rack or something.

You don't need a very powerful light for urban night commuting. The point isn't to illuminate your path, but to be seen, as streetlights are plentiful. Enjoy your future commute!

Lol @ the 200LED light too:)

I think the Phillip's Saferide is the best battery powered light in your Lumen range. It's really bright, and has a smart beam shape to keep the light on the road where you need it, and not hurting the eyes of others in your path.

Otherwise, if you're interested, I can suggest various dynamo lighting systems in the 150-350 lumen range.

Please do tell about dynamo lights. I've been having trouble finding stuff here in the States.

Also, we should totally all pitch in and get this guy a 350-LED light for his bike. And a trailer with a generator to power it.

Peter White Cycles has a ton of good information on lights as well as a plethora of neat bicycle lighting products -much of which is harder to find at most LBS's.

He's also got a lot of good info on studded tires, packs and racks and other neat bicycle stuff.

Light and Motion's commuter line is really good and affordable.  They use a Li-Ion battery and you can charge off a micro-usb from a computer or wall charger.  I use the vis-360 on my helmet and the urban 300 on my bars.  Highly recommended.  http://www.bikelights.com/commuter.html

How are the mounts in that line?  Any issues?

Rubber band on the headlight, still good after 6 mos. of use.  You can get replacement rubber band if it fails.  The helmet light stays attached to my helmet, still good after 1.5 yrs.

I'm pretty happy with my Expilion 400 from Cygolite.

As on another thread we have ordered dynos from local shops and I  think that the guys Boulevard Bikes have lamps as we have bought them there. The plus with the dynos is that once you put them you can forget about them and they are terrific bright lights. As mentioned Peter White does have a really good primer on them. We have one on our blog (Chicargobike.blogspot) as well which talks about cobbling together a dyno from old parts which can be cheap and not that complicated.

you're hilarious. I obviously meant lumens.

+1.

I use both the Vis 360 helmet light system (connectors and lights work great) and the Urban 300 (connector and light works great).  These are nice to use in tandem as they not only give you a nicely lit presence (particularly with the Vis360, which you can shine at inattentive people with a quick jerk of your head), but also nicely illuminate paths / streets that are not lit.
