Can we please do something like this in our state? Or at least connect the trails that currently exist in Cook County?

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo proposed completing the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Erie Canalway trails by 2020 to create the Empire State Trail, the largest state multi-use trail in the nation. To achieve this, the state will develop 350 miles of new trail in three phases to create a 750-mile pathway for hiking and biking along scenic vistas and through charming, historic communities. The Empire State Trail will span much of the state, from the New York Harbor up through the Adirondack Mountains to the Canadian border – and from the shores of Lake Erie along the historic Erie Canal to the heart of the Capital Region.

We can't even pass a state budget in Illinois for the last two fiscal years. But, yeah, sure, we can do this.

I mean, sure, it's a fine idea and I would support it. But realistically, where does this funding and political wherewithal  come from??

Illnois does have maps to get between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.  http://rideillinois.org/maps/grand-illinois-trail-guide/

And as an example of what can happen by completing the trail you can look at Missouri's cross state trails, Katy Trail State Park https://mostateparks.com/page/57750/entire-trail and http://www.bikekatytrail.com/ .
They are even connecting to another abandoned RR to get to Kansas City.  http://www.emissourian.com/features_people/feature_stories/katy-tra...
