My recent bike build: FUJI PALISADES ( Valite tubing)FIXED GEAR CONVERSION

This bike was originally a 8 or 10 speed with suntour derailers, dia compe brakes, 27 inch steel rims with a suntour freewheel cassette.....I rebuilt her for this cool russian guy up north.

Fuji built the Palisades using valite tubing, tubing from their own inhouse foundry( I believe)...The bike was incredible light before I stripped her, and I made her even lighter by getting rid all of that shifting mechanism crap (lol...I kid ...I kid) and adding the the following components:

- New blue F.U.B.A.R bar tape

- New blue velo racing saddle

- Refurbished Alex R450 rims

- New CST Czar tires with blue stripes

- Nitto stem and handle bars ( chopped and flipped)

- Polished Sugino cranks and chainrings(42t).

- Used Cog 16t ( Polished and Protected)

- Chainrings bolts were grinded down to 5mm for custom fitting

- New KMC Z410 Single Speed chain

- Polished Dia Compe side pull Caliper Brakes

- Refurbished Dirty Harry cross lever

- New housing and cabling

- 3 piece bottom bracket was disassembled- de-greased- re-greased and re-assembled

- headset was was disassembled- de-greased- re-greased and re-assembled

- Used Christophe toe cages

- Polished Mikashima AR-5 pedals

Actually it is a pretty well proven fact that sealed bearings are better as far as smoothness goes. It is true that loose ball bearings have a lot less initial drag but due to their designs they are much more prone to flex as you can imagine when things flex the friction of the loose ball bearings go way up. While sealed bearing do have a higher initial drag this is far offset by the fact that they are a lot less prone to flex and introduce little to negligible drag when loaded. The smoothness of the loose ball bearing is a mere fallacy when it comes to the real world application of the part while it is under load...Just my 2 cents...

Is this really a discernible difference though? I think the green argument has a lot of merit. We waste a a lot material every time we replace a cartridge. But then again, we use a lot of grease repacking bearings three or ten times over the length of a cartridge lifetime. Which is more efficient? (not including the cost of labor, since at least for me, re-packing hubs is fun).

As for the derailer hanger - it seems a bit odd to convert a touring bike to a fixie in the first place. I mean, if it is gonna be a commuter with racks and fenders and all that then it would be fine and understandable. But I'm guessing that that is not the case. Generally the fixie conversions seek to emulate a track bike with track geometry. Did the cool Russian guy even know what kind of bike he had with the long wheelbase and all those eyelets?

In short - I echo and reiterate the plea: PLEASE DO NOT grind off anything from a touring frame.
Whether that difference is discernible or not would depend on how sensitive you are to changes. I for one think that a world became a better place when the sealed bearings came around...As for green argument, I will not allow it to get in the way of my biking. If something lets me get out and enjoy biking more often as opposed to having to work on my bike I am more than likely to purchase that over the "green" choice.

The touring geometry with its slack angles and long wheelbase should handle like a minivan, but this minivan is pimped out with a low restriction exhaust, and a sport tuned suspension...Yet it still is a minivan! Oh and those brakes look awfully flexy to me...I for one would not want to depend on that to stop me...As for chopping hangers and cable bosses I compare it to castration. They mean no harm to you and I don't think anyone who chops a hanger or a cable boss for aesthetic reasons should be castrated in return.

The brakes are not only flexy, they do not have the reach to pull anything but rubber. Those mid-reach Dia-Compe's don't make the conversion from 27" to 700c on a lot of frames. On most frames, from my experience.

Dan,

There already is a bike porn thread (way back).

This could only be porn in the "show friends to gross them out" kind of way. Oh, and blue baron, trim that housing too!
