My midlife crisis was faced by my renewing my racing licence after 20 years' hiatus and taking to the velodrome (on a 35+ year old bike.)

I am in the same boat, before this yr I had not raced since 1983, but I did upgrade my equipment. I have been doing a few cat 5 crits, and cyclocross starts soon.

The article neglects the sub-phenomenon of middle-aged dudes who--instead of buying vintage European sports cars or American muscle cars--acquire small fleets of vintage, steel-frame road racers and then carefully restore and rebuild them with period-specific components. Not that anyone on the Chainlink would spend time and money on that.

Some people actually build them much better than they ever were to begin with. There are some people on Bikeforums.net in the Classic and Vintage forum who do things like build up old Schwinn Super Sports with all Campy parts or upgrade old bikes with modern brifter groups. Not all of em are dudes, either.

Of course not all of them are dudes (I meant that more inclusively than it sounded), and considering that I am one of these dudes myself, I didn't mean the post to be in any way derisive. My 1986 Schwinn Prelude is well on its way to having all its components replaced with period Campagnolo, Nitto, and TTT parts.
