Hey there Ladies & Gents - Yesterday I was able to visit with Joydivision who is selling his 1980 Mercian. If you are interested in a wonderful British steed and are willing to make the investment, I highly recommend it. I, unfortunately, don't have the budget right now so my bad luck is your good luck!

Wow, how did you find out?

I ended up buying this bike, and then much later finding out that it had been stolen.  Be careful out there, folks.

Wow! I found the blog entry. And the owner's comment. What did you/he end up doing? (if I may ask).

After buying the bike, I wrote about it on a blog.  A reader left me a message (which I didn't see until a year later) with infos that only the owner would know (e.g., where it was originally purchased new, which I knew from Mercian), telling me about how it was stolen, etc.

Amazing, huh?

After reading this, I wondered if this was just another Chainlink member who had mistakenly bought a stolen bike, had it for a while, then decided to sell it.  Looking at the profile, Jeff's blog, and the original owner's comment--clearly not.  The seller joined the Chainlink, promptly joined groups in which he posted information about the bike, repeatedly bumped the thread about the bike, sold it to Jeff, and then was seen nevermore.  Maybe we can learn from Jeff's experience to be wary of someone who joins and then immediately starts trying to sell something.  Of course, there will be legitimate sellers who do that, but maybe it just warrants a little more care in investigating, as Jeff suggests.
