I spent 2 hours this morning volunteering at the Chainlink table for the Bike the Drive event. It was fantastic! I had so much fun talking with fellow cyclists from everywhere. (One set of folks came in from Springfield IL and someone came from Minneapolis!) This type of outreach is a valuable way to connect with Chicago cyclists who may not know about all of the cycling opportunities our great city offers. I highly recommend you make time to volunteer at ANY bicycling event.
As a general question, Why do you volunteer???
(A special thanks to Julie for making the volunteer opportunities available!!!!)

I shall be volunteering for route signing for the United Performing Arts Fund Ride for the Arts next weekend. In previous years, I rode as a Bike Marshal on the 50-mile ride, the last two years, going over the Daniel Hoan Bridge over the mouth of the Milwaukee River. This ride, Milwaukee's largest, draws 7,000 riders each year. The next time I see my orthopedist, I expect to get cleared to ride, but I won't be adequately prepared to act as a Bike Marshal. Even if my arm is healed sufficiently to let me ride, my bike will still be in the shop because the shop has a two week backlog and I put it in this past Friday. I'd like to invite my fellow Chainlinkers to Milwaukee for the UPAF Ride.
Nice to meet you this morning, Tony. I often volunteer to help with Chainlink tables just because I like this place in spite of itself. ;-)
I recently volunteered to be a Bike Buddy. http://chicagobikebuddies.wordpress.com/ All of you with way more experience than I, just roll your eyes surreptitiously. But, I can probably relate better to the newbies since it was not so very long ago that I thought I was safer on the sidewalk than on the street.
