Lightweight commuter/cruiser recommendations?

Howdy - I'm looking for bike for my wifey. Weight is a major consideration as she will be carrying this up/down flights of stairs. She would use it primarily for casual neighborhood rides, potentially some mid-range rides of 20-40 miles. We plan on putting a kid carrier on a rear rack.

Budget: $500ish.

Thoughts?
