Lawerence Ave is one of the most scary streets to ride on, tallbike or ten speed alike.

I prefer Lawrence to most east/west streets. The Albany Park stretch is a bit rough though, just a lot to pay attention to.

I think it is great they are trying to improve Lawrence Ave, especially the part East of Western Ave. And while the word was never mentioned during the presentation last year, I think this design is influenced by Complete Streets legislation...
Questions:
1. I thought this was supposed to happen this year, not in 2011.....
2. Regarding the Sears Parking lot project. What happened to providing more parking space for bikes and cars and a new station for what by some measures is the busiest Metra station in the entire system. No mention of that at all.

At the last meeting they did incorporate more bike parking (thanks Susan for bringing that up). I'm blanking on the total number of parking spaces, but it seemed acceptable by the residents.

So this might be a dumb question, but how do you find out when the meetings for these developments are? I'm right by the proposed Sears development and had no idea it was in the works. Sounds like my building is going to be construction central next year.

Now if they would just plow this section of street. It has been one of the most consistently treacherous sections of road I have had the displeasure of riding.

1) Join the alderman's email list on their website - http://www.ward47.com/
2) Email dan.luna@cityofchicago.org and tell him you live within Paulina the boundaries of (east) Winchester (west) Leland (south) Winnemac (north).
3) You should also get flyers before meetings.

The replies to that article are pretty funny. Some folks are so resistant to any amount of change it's amazing, especially those concerned about traffic flow.

I've lived a stone's throw south of Lawrence for 10 years and it's a disaster between Western and Clark; drivers treat it as a sprint track to line up for position to the single lanes beyond Western and Clark, crossing it as a pedestrian around the CVS is always adventurous with distracted drivers texting and yacking away on cell phones. I don't even like driving my car on that stretch. Riding Lawrence west of Western ain't no big deal, it's an easy way to get to Elston and the start of the NBT. There are some really great tap rooms along Lawrence.

Unfortunately, Leland is also treated as a shortcut and with it one way eastbound east of Damen, it's a bitch cycling that street as well during the morning rush.

Traffic flow does really suck on Lawrence, I wonder just how much this proposed design will attract businesses which have sunk like cement boats along Lawrence between Winchester/Damen and just how much it will improve/control traffic flow.

I wouldn't pay to much attention to the comments of anonymous haters. I went to the neighborhood meeting last November and the response was generally positive. One thing I don't like is that it will be financed with TIF money. Another $12 million sucked out of the general funds. I thought that TIF money was to be used to improve blighted areas. Calling Lawrence Ave a blighted area is stretch by any definition.

They need a redesign on a lot of streets in Chicago for bikes. Lawrence is scary but Western is on my not to ride list, and even though I live near Broadway it's a little hairy at times and don't forget about North ave, between 94 and Halsted with those huge curbs!
