Kryptonite Lock - Jammed/stuck when locked and difficult to open

I have a Kryptonite Series 4 u-lock that I haven't used in about a year. I want to give it to someone but the lack of use has made it really difficult to open once unlocked. Turning the key is easy. But the lock is stuck and needs a pretty strong tug to pull it apart. I almost punched myself in the face with it last night. There's a little bit of rust on the tips that go into the lock but not much. I can take a photo tonight when I get home.

Has anyone else experienced a jammed lock similar to what I described? Is it as easy as adding some lube to the tips and holes or is it going to go back to being stuck after a few days? I don't want to give it away if it's going to cause problems to the person that will end up using it. Any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

And for future prevention, do any of you keep your locks separated if they won't be used for a while?

Thanks Cam I'll give that a shot. I figured some lube would do the trick but I'm wondering if at this point it'll need frequent lube to keep smooth.

Whenever I lube my chain I dribble a little oil onto all of the parts that move, including the part that grabs the notch in the shackle (probably what's sticking here). Doing that seems to keep everything working fine. Try putting a little oil in there and see if it gets better.

I have a similar Kryptonite lock (Evolution Series 4 or something). Needs a shot of oil periodically.

Kryptonite will fix your lock if you send it and the keys to them. See their FAQs for keyed products page. They even pay for locksmith costs when needed. And they can rekey a lock for $20 too if you want. Maybe you can get multiple locks on the same key.

Tri-flow is supposed to be better for locks than WD-40 according to the locksmith I met when he had to angle grind my Evolution 4 off something a couple of years ago (lock froze, key broke off)

Good luck

I'll definitely look into that. Thanks!
