Bicycle Illinois has an immediate need for a Participant Coordinator for our 2011 events!

 

Position Description:

We are looking for someone passionate about cycling and customer service to help convince people who have expressed an interest in our events to register! See below for the description of the specific job duties and qualifications. A copy of the job posting has also been posted at

The amount of work will seasonally fluctuate according to business needs. Currently we have a significant amount of work that needs to get done for the 2011 season. We also anticipate having a significant amount of work beginning this fall (October/November) in preparation for our 2012 events.

 

You must be available to participate in all of our events. During our events you will either act as a full time paid staff member should our participation levels warrant it, or ride as a participant free of charge as part of your compensation and available to work as a contingency if needed. The dates for our 2011 events are July 9th through 16th and August 7th. We may also need you a day or two before and/or after the events to help us prepare and/or clean up. It is our intent to have you become a full time paid staff member for our events in the long term.

 

This will primarily be a home-based position. Compensation will initially be paid on an hourly contract basis, changing to a commission basis in the future. You will need to be able to use your own computer (PC preferred) and provide your own bike and cycling gear. We will provide you with a cell phone, e-mail, all required software, and plenty of training.

Job Duties and Requirements:

 

Job Duties And Requirements Include But Are Not Limited To:

  • Developing a relationship with people who have previously expressed an interest in our events via e-mail, phone, or any other means, understanding their needs, and convincing them to register
  • Providing outstanding customer service
  • Familiarity with our event logistics and policies and procedures as posted on our web site (training will be provided)
  • Participation in all our events either working as a staff member or riding as a participant
  • Event Specific Requirements (if necessary)
    • Driving support vehicles
    • Attending rest stop locations on the road
    • Loading and unloading bicycles and baggage
    • Nightly purchasing of food, supplies, and gear
    • Loading and unloading supplies and gear before and/or after the events
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Future Job Duties And Requirements May Include:

  • Generating additional names of people interested in our events by implementing marketing ideas and attending marketing events
  • Developing partnership/sponsorship opportunities with other organizations
  • Assisting with new event development
  • Other business development opportunities as they come up

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

 

Mandatory Previous Qualifications and Experience:

  • Participation in organized cycling and/or other endurance sports events, especially events of a significant endurance nature (event organizing experience preferred)
  • Persuading people to purchase services and/or goods and/or participate in events
  • Flexibility to contact potential customers at times when they are available
  • Providing outstanding customer service
  • Ability to commute to the north side of Chicago for frequent meetings
  • Drivers license and a clean driving record (driving records will be checked)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. (such as full 5 gallon water coolers)
  • Personal computer, PC preferred (cell phone and software will be provided)
  • Physical ability and proper personal equipment (bike, personal gear, etc.) to complete our cycling events

 

Other Experience and Qualifications That Are A Plus But Not Mandatory:

  • Establishing partnerships and/or sponsorships with other organizations
  • Mechanical ability to fix bicycles
  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Medical training (first aid, CPR, etc.)
  • Food service
  • GPS systems and/or mapping
  • Lots of driving
  • A great sense of direction!

Gosh darn! I vowed to go 5 years without driving/renewing my license. well, that and I had a speeding ticket back in '06 ;-) This sounds like a great opportunity. Good luck filling the position!

Thanks. Actually a speeding ticket isn't that big of a deal in and of itself, as long as it wasn't for something like doing 85 through a playground.

Ironic that one of the requirements for a cycling event is driving.

 

Long distance rides were never for me, 30 miles is my maximum, but good luck hope it goes well.

Yeah, but unfortunately that's the way it is.
