Cycling has an unusual problem: Bikes are often too awesome. Frequently made of expensive materials and featuring up to 33 speeds, bicycles can be intimidating.

My neighbor has a 21-speed bike that has never been shifted out of 3rd gear. "I don't understand all that stuff," she told me.
