I use RAM handlebar mounts on my motorcycle for my iphone or gps. they're super solid and come in a variety of styles.

I've used the Topeak RideCase (http://www.topeak.com/products/PanoBike/ridecase_ip5_bk) and have been very happy with it.  Very sturdy, never felt like I was going to lose it when stopping quickly, easy to pop the phone on and off of the stem mount.

+1 on the RAM handlebar mounts. I have the X-Grip universal mount on my motorcycle, which holds an iPhone, XM Radio or a CB radio, depending on what I'm doing. Can be mounted on a bicycle as well.
