Stolen in front of Wendy's on Division just west of Ashland-

Black Pake (but with no logo on the frame, just all black) with brown straight-bladed fork.
Blue low profile front Velocity rim, rear Mavic open-sport silver rim.
Black Brooks saddle

The bike has a bunch of stickers, the biggest says "I (heart) Lawyers"

If you see this bike please give me a call asap, 312 810 0010, reward offered - $100

And just in general - there seems to be a rash of this right now, as i know a bunch of people who've had bikes stolen recently. The drive-thru guy at Wendy's actually saw this happen: a black sedan drives up next to the bike rack, passenger gets out and uses bolt cutters on the lock, throws the bike in the trunk, gets back in, they drive off. All in like 15 seconds. Scary.

John,

Are you aware of the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry?

http://stolenbike.org

It would be great if you could respond to these folks and tell them about it so they can get their theft reported somewhere where it can be easily searched and doesn't go away in a week, and also helps educate others as to what's happening and how theft occurs so they don't just feel helpless to avoid it.

Also, we have a stolen bike thread here (click "forum" and see the "do this first" thread.)

In busy times we get 10-12 reports a day at the registry-- this forum would quickly become unusable if there was a new thread for every stolen bike.

Bike Theft is a personal concern, so I'm not trying to minimize it, but I haven't seen any evidence of any sort of "rash" of theft-- it seems to go up and down mostly with the number of people out riding, which seems largely temperature/weather dependent. Overall the trend has certainly been upwards.

And not to blame the victim, as it should be theoretically possible in a civilized society to find your personal belongings where you left them, but the described bike should not have been locked only with a cable lock in this city.

Oh-- and never offer a reward for the return of a bike-- you'll either be rewarding a bike thief directly, or someone who helps keep bike theft lucrative.

That is sad.  There is always a "rash" of bike thefts in this city -especially when it is YOUR bike that got stolen :(  People usually notice things after it hits home and not to "other" people.  That's human nature I guess.

As for trolling Craigslist, I'm sure there are tons of people who are trolling C-list for bikes but it seems that things are really slowing down this year as many bikes seem to be listed over and over again at fairly decent prices.  What's up with that?

Maybe there should be a thread or maybe even group on The Chainlink for good deals, neat vintage stuff (especially British 3-speeds), outrageous/crazy prices to laugh about, and such neat stuff that can be passed on here and shared when found on Craigslist.
