I use race tires and haven't had a problem during winter yet. I was going to switch to knobby tires but  never bothered.

Anyone else use regular road tires?

Do y'all have your knobby tires in front and back, or just back?

By regular road tires, do you mean 23c or 25c?

Yeah

I'm still using regular road tires but this is my first time biking through winter.  Might make the switch if I feel unsafe.

I ran road tires (25c) last year and did fine, but definitely had a lot of sliding. I built up a 29er SS for this year just to see if it makes a difference, but can't really make the call yet....

I use road tires. Most winter days have clear streets. On messy days I might be a little wobbly in places, but nothing major.

Nice pics!

Here are my highlights from Thursday night's commute, doesn't look so nice:

I have Schwalbe Marathon Winters, which are great for plowed streets and ice, but not good in deep snow, since they are not very knobby or have deep treads. I got knocked around in the snow. There are patches (the alley behind me) where I encounter ice every day all winter, and the studs are awesome. I fall when I try to get off, but not while riding up to the back gate :)

I've ridden in road tires and they work fairly well. In light snow, they do a great job cutting through it and getting to the asphalt underneath.  I'm not sure knobbies are all that effective.  I have cx pro knobbies on my commuter/cx bike and I've noticed last winter and this winter that snow just gets packed between the knobbies and makes the tires have less traction if anything because there's less rubber in contact with the road.  Also, my knobbies tend to get a bit squirmy when on open grate bridges since there's a less even surface on them.

Cameron & I rode ~50 miles from Daley Plaza to Three Floyds in Munster, IN; beers and lunch; Munster, IN to Flossmoor Station in Flossmoor, IL; beers; Illinois Central back to Michigan Ave. & Randolph. Michigan & Randolph home. Where was everyone?

Yep.  Bike lanes are getting back to normal.  Halsted/Lincoln/Wells there were just a few areas I had to take the car lane vs. bike lane.  Windy.  Nice ride in.

Nice day, not too cold at all. There was a bit of wind, but I didn't find it to be so bad. Traffic was super light and I realized that it was MLK Day today and I look forward to having an easy commute home.
