Hi all!
My name is Jennifer and I'm a journalism student currently writing a story about wintertime fitness. For a small sidebar to the article, I'm looking to include a few specific bike routes in Chicago that make for a safe, and fun, winter workout. Ideally, the routes would be for the average person who doesn't have a ton of cycling experience, but likes to occasionally ride for fitness.
Does anyone have suggestions?
I'd really appreciate any help!

Well, you have to have the Lakefront Trail on the top of your list!
Thank you for the suggestion Steve--that was my concern with the Lakefront Trail as well, Kevin. Perhaps too windy and icy? Any other ideas?
For someone without a lot of experience, timing might matter. As Kevin says, main streets will be clear but probably not a good place for a fitness ride during rush hour! On the weekends, get out before 8:00 a.m. At least the sun will be up! On weekdays, probably need to get out before 6:30 a.m. Don't forget the lights for the next few months.

I realize that winter is unpredictable in re the LFT and last winter was exceptionally nice, but I rode to work nearly each day on said trail throughout. Forums like this one are wonderful resources to determine if the Trail is passable on any given day.
Other possibilities include the various trails in the forest preserves, which can be managed happily on a cross or mountain bike. One in particular, the North Branch (http://www.traillink.com/trail/north-branch-trail.aspx) is wonderful.
Thinking sideways, lots of riders participate in cyclocross events in the winter to keep fit. You don't have to be a hard core racer, either, there are lots of riders who are just out for the fun. Each is like a party.
