Helmet pad goes bad?

What do you do when the pads and straps on your helmet get all salty and start to smell like that sewer grate you just rode over? I just ran water over mine and think it will be a few days before it all dries out and I discover whether that worked or not. Suggestions?

I put a small amount of laundry soap in a spray bottle with water, spray it on, use a cloth to scrub the pads and straps, then rinse. It seems to dry out overnight.
