HEAD CASE

ICEDOT'S CRASH SENSOR MIGHT SAVE YOUR DOME

The downside of going green? Bikes don't come with airbags.

Sure, there've been 25 percent fewer car-on-bike fatalities since 1995, but your skull still can't compete with an SUV.

Enter the next step in head protection: ICEdot's Crashan impact sensor for the helmet you've already been wearing. (Right?)

Serious brain injuries can sometimes take more than a minute to manifest, so any smash-up should be checked out ASAP. Crash calls the right people for you, just in case you can't yourself.

The sensor is an innocuous, button-sized device that attaches to your bike helmet. It communicates with your smartphone via Bluetooth and, if it measures a significant enough impact, sends a signal to the connected app.

If you don't cancel the 30-second countdown first, the app then sends your GPS coordinates and a crash notification to your emergency contacts via text.

We'll save our prank ideas for where else to put the sensor for our April Fool's edition.

Good idea.

WAY too expensive!

Yep, probably not workable until prices drop some (a lot?).  But this idea could eventually save some lives in rural areas, both for cyclists and motorcyclists.

If only I had a smart phone.  Or a dumb one.

Luddite!

I do not know how well this would work in real life for several reasons

1) you would have to have the app running on your phone while you are riding.

2) you would have to have good enough cell coverage for the phone to work.

3) this device would need some sort of battery, and it would have to be charged before each ride

4) it would have to communicate to the device via BT, and anyone with a BT headset knows how often they go wanky

5) the phone would have had to survive the accident in working order.
