Very cool: Two people, two seats, two sets of handlebars, four pedals, two wheels. They were chatting in a relaxed manner as they pedaled down Lincoln today. Anyone seen a tandem like this before?

Looks like only one person really has control of the steering...

...and here's how one can build it for "themselves":

Here's a picture of another solution (more like hodge podgin'):

Those are called semi-recumbent tandems, I really like them. Bilenky makes one in the US, and a German company called Hase makes one, too:

I've seen those a few places. They seem like a good set up, because like you noted it's easier to talk, and both riders get to see.

I thought I saw a tandem with the front person sitting in a recumbent position and a traditional seating position in the rear.  Their faces didn't seem that far apart so probably easier to converse?

Looking at the crank setup, it would never do for anything but a relaxed cruiser, but it sure is cool! I would love to ride one someday. Still have my old Shwinn Twinn, although it has been modified to full cantilever, real mountain-bike wheels (60-spoke rear with drum), 12-speed, etc, as well as the Roland. A couple years ago I picked up a nice Bilenky Viewpoint as mentioned above. Very nice from the perspective of being able to carry on a conversation while pedaling as well as the stoker being able to stop pedaling and/or adjust her cadence in relation to the captain's, but we don't seem to use it as much as I had hoped. It has the S&S couplers, so I have been able to partially disassemble it and throw it in the back of my VW Golf to haul it up to Wisconsin for some rides. Unfortunately, Trish loves her Specialized Dolce so much that I just can't get her to ride anything else.
