I've thought about buying a bag of asphalt repair stuff at Menards and adding a small bit to certain utility repaired holes (they seem to usually be square or rectangle in nature and filled with cement a couple of inches short of reaching the street surface of the asphalt) on some of the routes I bike every day. It appears as if they purposefully left that void to be filled with asphault but it never was filled.
All I need is a couple inch wide patch on the leading edge and the trailing edge of the hole to create a little bit of a ramp to dampen the drop into the hole and the corresponding BAM! that results coming out of the hole.
Much of the time I can go around these things but there are a few holes that seem that they go too far into the traffic next to me and for the life of me I cant seem to find an easy way to ride through them without rattling the fillings in my teeth.
Would the city patch something like that if I called 311 and said it was in the bike lane and needed to be patched?
It also begs the question- are we as cyclist entitled to compensation for damage to our bikes from holes that are reported but go unrepaired (such as I've heard it is with cars)?
