Look into a 2meter repeater group or 6meter repeater group. These are small handheld units and can be good short and long range communicators since they bounce signals off repeater stations.

It has been yearts since I've had friends in repeaters but a quick search should turn up some info. Many times these groups are very open to community actions as it can bolster their media profile and most are avid techies anyway.
