The Chainlink

Here is a great chance for you to say I told ya so.

I read the article here about stolen bikes, securing bikes, etc. I was told by someone here that I really need to secure my bikes in the garage I share with my neighbors. I talked about it with my husband and he promised to look into it. And we live in NW suburbs, so stuff like that doesn't usually happen

Well, guess what: 2 Treks and 1 Huffy are gone gone gone. Now I am biking blogger without a bike with a stupid look on my face stocking Craigslist all day long

I thought Huffy had gone out of business years ago. Has someone resurrected this ah, venerable name? The return of the gas pipe special.

Last I heard the name got sucked up by a Chinese concern which then got sucked up by a Canadian concern.

Huffy is owned by the same people who own Russel Athletic, Jerzees, and the people who make Spaulding and Dudley sports balls.

All their bikes are built under contract by whatever Chinese factory wins the low bid that year and stamped (or stickered as the case may be) with the huffy name before being shipped to the USA.  I don't think any other country is dumb enough to buy their garbage under that name -they buy the same junk under other local names probably.

You sure did get more expensive lesson

I paid $1500 for my lesson...

Told my husband to list our bikes in the registry and he did set the alerts on Craigslist. I almost freaked out this morning - I thought I saw the Huffy listed, woke my husband up and he said that wasn't it. :(

I am letting him sit on it I am freaking out way too much watching it. And I feel like every other bike sold there is stolen.

Thank You

Don't know if this post got skipped...

I would set up a Google alert or several to do the craigslist stalking for you.

Also, I can't tell whether you've listed the bikes here:

http://chicago.stolenbike.org/

but I think it would increase your chance of getting them back, and maybe help warn others about the risk of unsecured bikes in garages.

Lots of information. Yeah, Huffy is not the bike I would consider for a commute or the trail riding. I am a part of their Moms on Bikes program and for somebody who wants to starting riding a bike to the grocery store, this one is good enough (and cheap). I do wish they put money into the functionality instead of the looks (it is pretty)

Huffy does one thing well -sell a very cheap bike.   I won't call it affordable since if it is actually ridden it will become very expensive over time due to the fact they don't stay tuned because the parts are very cheap.  Many of the components are non-standard and therefore WHEN something breaks it'll often cost more to replace a whole assembly with a real bike part than a new Huffy costs to buy new.

But Huffy knows that the average bike bought in a department store will only be ridden a few times before it is tossed into the back of a garage and forgotten -so in that case it probably is cheaper in the end than buying a real bike that is designed to go more than 100-200 miles in its service lifetime.

They really are disposable bikes -but for a loaner bike it might be a good way to go if you aren't sure it'll ever get returned.

Huffy, Huffy, Huffy. I know it is not anything I wouldn't of bought on my own. It is not thought through. If I wanted to get a "cheap" bike for maybe going to a grocery store and save a buck on gas. Here it is:(Please don't make fun of the steering wheel - my screwup for not putting it in the right way before taking a picture) These awesome looking saddle bags that a big and could fit my whole grocery cart are designed so when you are riding a bike, they are touching the spokes and that is um... quite inconvenient.

My husband just recovered one bike at the garage in the building next to ours. Guess which one? You got it - Huffy.  The cop talked to them - they just cover for each other. Obviously they are lying about getting it from a kid in the subdivision 5 min away from ours. What kid? We don't know his name. We don't know where lives. We don't speak English well.

Here is a thing - this is the second time I was robbed in a short period time by someone who lives in my subdivision. The whole subdivision is 88 units. It is freaking blowing my mind

Oh, that is rich...

Maybe the thieves dumped it in the alley when they got it out into the light and realized it was a Huffy and your neighbors found it there?

But why would they  lie about that?

People suck.
