All the reports on this note that Hackman was not wearing a helmet. As we all know, helmets will prevent cars and pickup trucks from driving into us.

This one is especially incendiary for the attitude it presents.  Luckily there was grass nearby? Anything bigger than a small car?  I think even a small car will hurt the same as a big truck if the two vehicles are going the same speed WHEN THEY HIT YOU.

oh my dang. i really like how they all seem to think that it's what you finally land on, after you've already absorbed all the energy of the impact, after you've gone over the hood, or your handlebars, and likely already hit the ground once. as long as you land on some grass, you'll be just dandy. as those of us who have been hit can attest, you could land on a big old pile of broken glass, and it still wouldn't hurt as much as the impact with the car

Helmets are a magic talisman.  It's like one of those Saint Christopher magic jesus on your dashboard.  As long as you have one of those you are golden.

One can potentially save your life and at least help prevent a head fracture, while the other cannot.

Let's see, after adjusting for ... yep, same thing!

What a cool looking bag! Is that a saddle bag? Does it look so cool and broken in because it is old and broken in or did it come that way?

St. Christopher being a real live human saint and the statistical efficacy of bicycle helmets are both in up in the air. 

I stand by my comparison. 

Now motorcycle helmets are something totally different in my opinion. i have a $400 Shoei full-faced helmet that I wear every time I ride a motorcycle.

As far as wearing a helmet on a bicycle is concerned, if one feels it is that necessary then they should also be wearing one as a pedestrian or even in an automobile as they would do even more good in those situations than they would do on a bicycle.
