Freeze proof water hose prevention ideas - (camelback/platypus,etc.)

Any ideas? This is a huge bummer on the super cold days.

My first attempt will be to take half inch foam pipe insulator and cut it into little pieces that will allow the hose to bend easily. Might work. Maybe? Hmmm...

Anyone have any less silly solutions to this tragic winter problem?

Kevin is absolutely wrong in his advice - he has the ratio backwards, and I am thinking of looking into trying to distill whiskey with electrolytes. Until then, is there some powder e.g. gatorade/zym... you can use that has enough salt or other agent which will significantly lower the freezing point without compromising the benefits/quenching?

Just saw this and thought it might be a possible solution. The water hose is designed to run along your arm so you can have the bite valve sticking out from under your sleeve. That'll probably be just as effective as an insulating tube. It's a little expensive though.

Like others have noted, simply blowing back into the tube goes a long way towards keeping the hose free from Ice.

Blowing into the tube fills the bladder with air very quickly, so this has not been a great idea. Perhaps I am overblowing, but the nature of the tube is that it keeps water in it unless you really blow it back. The result is that after three drinks of water and blowing it back in the bag, I have to stop and release the air or else I would not be able to do another blow into the bag.

I should invest in an insulated sleeve and be done with it. Cheers for all the help.

emphasis on *can* but usually does not, right?

Interesting article, but it sounds like the "controlled" experiments reproducing the effect carefully alter the mass, gas, convection currents, or environment around the container.

I will admit, however, if anyone can achieve these unlikely circumstances, it is probably a Chainlinker!

Against one's intuition, warm water can freeze faster than cold water. It has to do with the Mpemba effect: http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/hot_water.html

On cold days like this, with less sweat, I tend to get less thirsty too so it's not a huge concern (and I commute 1-1.5hrs each way). Days where water becomes solid in a short period of time are rare, so even if i do get thirsty, i'll be able to sift through the ice pieces before I reach my destination.

Ok, Lee I finally tried it out. It works great except I looked like a hunchback, but I don't really care. The bladder does make the water taste bad. I washed it out good before I went out and still tasted bad. When I got home I rinsed it out with some bleach water. It seems to have taken the taste out, but I haven't tried it yet. I will be trying it out again tomorrow.

I am not sure how this would work for a bladder, but using a denture cleaning tablet takes out the bad taste in water bottles. just fill it up 3/4 of the way pop in a half tablet and then rinse it well.
