The Chainlink

I saw this on at the Chicago Reader's website:

Tonight from 5 to 7 PM at the Milwaukee/Damen/North intersection, the Active Transportation Alliance will distribute free bike headlights to cyclists (you must be on a bike to get a headlight) while supplies last. The giveaway is part of an initiative to encourage safe cycling; Illinois law requires cyclists to use a front headlight and rear reflector when riding at night.

Sweet its on my way home. Thanks
And, to give credit where it's due (since it's not mentioned in the Reader)...the lights were donated by the Law Offices of Jim Freeman.

We really appreciate the donation and opportunity to spread the word that front headlight and rear reflector is the law.

One night only and for only 2 hours?

That will ensure saftey?....come on

This needs to run throughout the entire weekend.

It is a step, but more like a baby step in a walker.
dammit, i went another route today!!

ishnock, are you donating bike lights? or money? If not i 'd say you can't really talk.
I understand the favor, and I appreciate their efforts.

But come on,a city that is full of corruption up the anus, and all they can offer are free lights for 2 hours?

it's a great deed it just needs to be longer. It's a micro deed.

I'm sorry the city needs to really step up to the plate to promote biking.....

Even u missed it...

ishnock, don't be such a tool. This isn't the city giving away bike lights. This is one man, Jim Freeman, who paid a non-profit, Active Trans, to give away bike lights for two hours. This has nothing to do with the city.

Why are you belittling their efforts? What are you doing to promote bike safety?
It's a great deed..I love the idea,but for
2 hours on a weekday?

It would have been better to have had it on a Saturday or Sunday.Fridays are tough. The last day of the week. Rush hour
causing people and traffic to be everywhere, not giving people a chance to make it.

Im not downplaying the deed, just the manner in which it was presented.

The general idea is not to provide a place for people to go and pick up free bike lights; it's to stop unlit people, at random, and provide them a light.

Regardless, if you need a light and are too cheap/broke to go buy one, then quit your whining and get your ass to the prescribed place and time.

I rode by tonight at around 6:30pm, and that is exactly how they were doing things. I have pretty bright front and rear lights, and they didn't offer me a free light (and they shouldn't have, I'm not the target they are trying to reach). When someone rode by without a front light, however, they practically chased them down to make sure they got one. Great service, and hopefully the people they reached continue to use them.

That makes sense and is a lot more understandable....The information
was not explained in that detail.

I have a knog up front and a knog in the back.......

Fixed and free.

This was a great night and my first time volunteering for this. I got to meet Lawyer Jim for the first time and think he should be commended for doing things like this; it isn't the first time he has....

I personally gave out/put on over 25 lights. It was awesome!

The best part of the night though was the response from 'hipsters' who were unwilling to take a FREE light. "No thanks, I don't want one."

What the hell is wrong with these people?
I have a weblog, IllinoisBicycleLaw.com, where I put a post about what it is the law requires. The law is kind of weirdly drafted; the IL legislature should probably take another crack at this and make it simpler.

By the way, if you are riding at night and get hit by a car and don't have a light, the driver's insurance company will argue 99.9% of the time that the collision was your fault.
