Street Fight -- Choosing the Bull's Bike
All things considered, road biking is an inexpensive workout, a cheap way to get around, or a fun new hobby. In typical Bull fashion, we're here to help you jump in with both feet. In preparation for this issue, we tested a few new road bikes in the $600-$800 range, and picked one that clearly stood out from the rest.
Without dragging you through the details, our top road bike was chosen based on a few simple criteria: bang for the buck, style and comfort, and overall ride. After the bikes were put through the grinder, one clearly stood out from the rest: the 2002 Mongoose Morzine.
Retailing for about $700, the Morzine is the entry-level bike in Mongoose's three-bike road category, but it shares a lot of technology with its more expensive big brothers. Its 7005 aluminum frame and fork combination is extremely light and responsive, and is just stiff enough to translate most of your pedal power to the pavement.
Speaking of power, plenty of it is transmitted via the Morzine's 24-speed Sora drivetrain. STI shifters make for biggity-bang shifts, as soon as you get used to the FlightDeck controls (your brake levers pull double duty as shifters, so it takes a few miles to learn to hammer a shift without also spiking your brakes!).
On the road, the Morzine feels light. The combination of compact frame geometry and a forward cockpit area make you feel like you're about to fly right off the front end, but this feeling will pass as you get comfortable with the Morzine's solid ability to track through turns at high speeds. Eventually, you'll even stop puckering your posterior long enough to enjoy some of those winding downhills. Eventually.
Overall, the 2002 Morzine blew away any other bike in this price range. Can you buy a better bike? Absolutely. There's plenty of "upside" in this category if you're willing to part with the jack. But can you get a better bike than the Mongoose Morzine for $700? Don't bet on it!
