Just wondering, I see a ton of non-descript bikes locked up everywhere. I like the gunmetal/brushed aluminum paintiob on my Giant OCR, and I know it makes my ride more of a target, but I can't bring myself to ugly it up! My mom bought a beautiful dining table once, then she covered it up under a drab looking tablecloth to "protect" it even if she could no longer look at it. Do you guys do the same with your bikes, like make them ugly but knowing that underneath they are beautiful?

I would think this depends on the person. As for me I did ugly up my Fuji Track for 2 reasons.

1)To make it unappealing to thieves.
2)To make it such a unique bike that it would have no resale value.

Most thieves can tell the difference between a good bike and a bad bike simply by looking at it and its components. I think "uglfying" an everyday bike which will be locked outside does have some merit, on the other hand I would never even think about putting any paint on my race bikes with the exception of touch-up paint...That's my 2 cents on the subject...

I ugly up my bikes to match my face and my personality.
I "ugly up" my bike in context. I park it next to bikes that look more expensive.
i just lock up properly and there isn't much to worry about
Locking your bike at busy bike racks seems to do the trick too... you'd be amazed at the spaces people manage to cram those rent-a-crusiers with little regard to the bike next to them.... effin tourists...
i"m kinda in a dot dot dot kinda mood...
I love my babies too much to ugly them up. When I lock them up they are near my front door at work. Which I always, or a coworker has an eye on them. I don't like to go out and leave them where I can't see them.
Sure do. But it didn't prevent the ugliest one from being stolen anyway. Sniffle.
Nope. I so rarely ride a non-racing bike --- I train before work and keep my bike in my cube while I work. I never lock them outside, which occasionally causes problems. Most places aren't willing to let you walk in with your bike on your shoulder.

On the other hand, I wouldn't call my road racing bike pretty in the first place. I love love love that bike, but I've never been a fan of the paint job.
Nope, I have a beater bike for locking up, so my nice bike doesn't have to suffer the indignity of being chained to a pole. :) And the beater is ugly because it was cheap and built from spare parts.
um, yeah. you got it. for sure.....right on there bro. jeez. I don't see what was the "joke" about my post. I don't have a lot of money to buy back a bike if it were stolen. It means a lot to me. But that is just me. I am a jerk for wanting to not have my bike stolen.

I don't see where I brought up anything along the lines of a "significant other" either.

You may want to put a seat on that seat post and ride a little slower.

Bwahahahaha.. So your saying that you will let your lover/BF/sig. other etc. out of your view, and even perhaps for days at a time, but when it comes to your bike for a couple of hours you simply arent having it? Ha-larious! When you go camping does it look a little something like this?

Get a Kryptonite Evo Series U-Lock and a cable and ride in style, not fear.

agreed, as do I.
I just electrical taped up my old pony, and it's like brand new! But not like a fancy brand new expensive bike. You can always take the tape off easily and it's like it never happened.

and they're all beautiful underneath....
