Just got this email, so don't plan to ride Divvy home today:


 



 



 


Good morning.

Due to the weather, we will temporarily close Divvy at 12:00PM on Thursday, January 2, 2014 to protect the safety of our members and staff. No bikes can be rented after the temporary closure has begun, though any bikes in use at the time can be returned to any Divvy station with an available dock.

If you have any question about whether the system is open or closed, please call to speak with a Member Service Representative at 1-855-55-DIVVY (553-4889). You can also find the latest updates on the
Divvy website, Facebook, and Twitter. Members will also be informed of closure and re-opening via email.



In December, we served nearly 45,000 trips, and we're looking forward to serving many more this winter.

It sounds to me like you're viewing Divvy more as a recreational service to be enjoyed on nice days than a dedicated means of transportation on which people can rely to commute to and from work, school, the doctor, or other essential activities. I've grown quite used to being able to rely on Divvy so that's why my opinions are quite strong. But hey, I live by the lake and so I've got the red line, busses, cabs, Lyft, iGo (Enterprise), Zipcar, "bruh, hook it up with a ride," etc and the means to use any of them at will. That's not always true for everyone if you go a few miles west. That's all I'm trying to say.

No kidding. Over the next few years Divvy will get city-wide coverage including places that don't have good CTA coverage. Those same places tend to have almost no cabs. I'd hate to see people get stranded for no good reason.

Again, I think Divvy deserves the benefit of the doubt. As a new system I can't inagine they aren't hard at work trying to resolve these problems. Down time means bad press & no money & no new business wants that if they can avoid it. In any business nothing is absolute. Create & adjust & adjust...

There was no notification at the kiosk — just the docks did not authorize a checkout when swiping your keyfob.

You guys must have cabin fever with all of this posting. Adam shut up, you whine about everything. Get a thicker skin. It's winter for damn sake. Winter disadvantages everyone!

In early February 2010 or '11 (possibly the same blizzard week you are describing), I witnessed this scene: Union Station packed to the brim with unhappy commuters and travelers. My Amtrak train southbound had been cancelled entirely.

 

Fortunately, my business downstate was not a matter of life-and-death, so I simply went home. :)

I'm sure Divvy will face a similar situation, if they haven't already, and it won't have anything to do with recreation vs. utility, or Chicago vs. Miami, or whether or not the annual members consider the weather to be suitable for bike riding, or whatever. It will just be the realities of running a transportation system.

h 1.0... have you checked their website or called any of the contact numbers? Or are you just complaing about something you expect to be there because they did say 24/7? Nobody or nothing works perfectly all of the tine. Except of course maybe you. Give the bitching a rest & let them do their jobs fixing things. Maybe read a book or take public trans somewhere...
It should be clearly posted on every website all possible scenarios for closure, said no sane person ever. Do you read the entire document before you click the "I agree" button for anything online? Please get real.

Fair questions. What did the Divvy rep say when you called them to ask for an explanation? You did call them, did you?

Comparisons to suspending other modes of travel are wearing very thin.

Keep looking to Divvy for further updates. Also imagine if you will trying to run around keeping all 300 stations spread all over the city. They want you're loyalty & money. They want to be back ASAP. What business wouldn't?
