Dibs on dug out parking

I'm courious on what other sometimes drivers, most of the time cyclists think about this:

 

Ive dug out 2 spaces so far and that didnt bother me. What bothers me is the guy who didn't dig out his van for a week but when he finnaly did he marked his spot. Dibs only count the day or two after the storm, any longer and your a lazy ass

Really?  I think they are kind of gross.   One of those weird candies you only see at the movie theater like goobers and such...

What if you don't have a garage or off-street parking available?

Obviously we need to cut down a bunch of trees and burn a lot of fuel/energy/resources building them on green spaces...

Depave Lake Shore Drive to build a bunch of garages from Hollywood to 57th Street?  I think I'm on to something here.

Since today seems as if it may be the beginning of a supposed thaw in the forecast (dare I say that I saw 50 degrees on the horizon?!), I say today should be considered the official "get your ugly trash out of the road" day.

Not sure if you're joking or not but isn't that exactly what a city sticker is for?  Anyone who's a resident of the city and has a car buys a $75 sticker each year.  Presumably that pays for expenses related to roads and parking.  There's even a surcharge if you live in certain neighborhoods and want to be able to park on the street.

My wife and I have 2 kids and no cars. I have dug out 2 spots in front of our building as well as the 200 plus lineal feet of sidewalk and sidewalk curb cuts and out to the middle of the street so that pedestrians can actually walk safely. Oh yeah and the 2 large concrete pads that have peoples gas manholes that contain the gas regulators for the main street line. I am a big fan of having consistent pressure to building boiler etc. What I don't understand is how can you take dibs on a spot in the street when you haven't even bothered to shovel the sidewalk in front of your house. I take a square d handle shovel with me on my xtracyle to shovel out the bike spots that I need. I shovelled a real nice spot out at Stanleys the other day taking a whopping 10 minutes. Should i be throwing up chairs wherever I dig out a spot? I just find it amazing that people can be so incredible selfish and unable to view the thing holistically. If some people are lazy slackers that's not a news flash, but letting that dictate your behavior is sad.

I agree with this.  My sidewalk is the ONLY one in the block that is shovelled fully out to its full width.  the neghbors to the right of us have not shoveled out even enough for a wheelchair to pass without leaving marks on the snow on both sides. The neighbors on the left are across the alley and the cut-out/ramp from the sidewalk to the alley was only shoveled out just wide enough for one person to walk.  

 

I was out cleaning up my own sidewalk and the cut-out to the alley (and part of the alley too so a wheelchair could make it to the street) when a person came by pushing a second person in a wheelchair.  they were stuck in the snow of the neighbor to the left at the cut-out.  I rescued them and subsequently shoveled out the area that the people who take care of that building were too lazy to take care of themselves (even though they are getting paid to do this).  

 

It's been a week and a half since the blizzard has been over and many sidewalks in Logan Square are only shoveled out one shovel-width.  The intersection of Milwaukee/Kimball/Diversey is impassible by foot as the sidewalks are bareley shoveled and the cut-outs to the street are 3-foot banks with a goat trail up and over them.  Even the bus stops are not shoveled out and people are still getting off the bus onto a mountain of snow at the curb.  I don't go that way very often but was surprised when I went to Giordano's the other day to pick up a pizza for dinner and walk it back.  

 

WTF is wrong with people in this city?  There is a reason why people in Wisconsin where I grew up call us FIBs.

When we got to Chicago, we sold our car and are just using bikes, and our feet. I dug out 3 spots just to help out the neighborhood. Besides, the lazy ass who doesn't is going to get fatter...a just reward.

I completely agree too. It takes almost no time to shovel out a spot - not really. And anyone who has been in a neighborhood for any length of time know who the elderly people are who might have more trouble. How is it that people can't get off their batooties for 10 freakin' minutes of shoveling? I also went and shoveled out the intersections on my half my block. It takes a village...and we are the...village people.
