Police: Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crash in Pilsen
A bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash with a car this morning in the city's Pilsen neighborhood, police said.

We've had a couple of media calls about this tragic, fatal crash. ABC and FM news 101.1 are stopping by our office today.

Just awful. Another example of why I hate the term "accident" in instances like this. It's a "collision" due to the motorist's negligence and nothing less. Thoughts and prayers to the bicyclists family and friends.

We agree, Mike, we always use the word "crash." Crashes, in almost all cases, are preventable.

RIP, very sad. I hope the driver is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Edit: But I have to admit, I'm somewhat skeptical, having seen the "justice" system for hit and run offenders in action, previously.

Looks like the name got released (on the ABC link above). Did anyone know Fredrick Kobrick?

R.I.P.

Horrible...I ride 18th everyday to and from work for about a mile or so...and yes, hit someone on a bike, kill them...and your punishment is usually not commensurate with the damage they've inflicted.

Either way, some one effed up, and because of that eff up, someone else is dead...going to ride by the scene on my way home tonight. Makes me sad...

Man charged with DUI in fatal Pilsen hit-and-run of bicyclist

Staff report

1:57 AM CDT, August 24, 2011

A 38-year-old man has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI in a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in the Pilsen neighborhood early Tuesday morning, police said today.

Ignacio Ramirez was also charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, as well as being issued several traffic citations.

At about 12:50 a.m., police said Ramirez struck a 30-year-old bicyclist near the intersection of 18th and Carpenter streets before fleeing the scene.

The bicyclist, identified by authorities as Fredrick Kobrick, of the 1700 block of South Desplaines Street, was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy performed later in the day confirmed the bicyclist's death was caused by mulitple injuries in the collision and was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Ramirez, of the 500 block of West Walton Street, was taken into custody a short distance from the crash site. Police didn't provide his blood-alcohol level.

He is expected to appear in bond court later today.

Truly a sad night. I hope this inspires others to keep biking and not hinder

Glad that he is hit with the charges "reckless homicide and aggravated DUI", but why later in the article is it ruled an "accident"?

So sad.

My assumption would be it was ruled an "accident" because the driver did not "intentionally" hit the bicyclist.  The driver was obviously still being grossly/criminally negligent, which is why he is being charged with aggravated DUI and reckless homicide for the fatal accident.  Nothing in the article suggests he "intentionally" ran the cyclist down, however.  If he had acted intentionally, rather than negligently/recklessly/accidentally, we'd be talking about first degree murder.

edit: Oh, and I agree "crash" is a much more accurate descriptor for this type of thing.  That's just not the term the police generally use when investigating and charging, however.
