The Chainlink

wow!  it feels nice to be 'back in the chainlink.'  excited to let the trainer gather dust!!!

I'm traveling to Italy in September for a birthday party and would LOVE to ride a bit.  So far, i don't know much about this sort of thing ... do it on my own, with an outfitter, alone, camp or inns, my bike or rental, gear, etc.

Is there anyone who would be willing to clue me in, maybe even answer the important questions i don't even know yet to ask?

thank you ever so kindly,

gayle stephens

Its all depends what you want to do and how much money you are willing or able to spend.  At one extreme you can go fully self-supported w/ camping.  At the other end you can get an everything-included guided bike tour.  There are all kind of resources on the net for how do to self-supported tours like http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/ but you need to invest in a lot of gear if you don't have it and I wouldn't recommend your first tour be in a foreign country.  As far as tour packages, there are guided tours and self-guided tours where they take your baggage from Hotel A and Hotel B and you ride on your own time between them.  I'm going to be doing a self-guided tour in Germany later this year (first one I'll have done so I'll see how it goes) and I am willing to spend some $$$ for a lazy lazy vacation where all I have to plan is which breweries to visit on the way.

good info alex (aka evane x)

As long as we're on the subject : I'd like to find a few folks to do a semi-supported ride later this summer

to either PEI (prince edward island) or Nova Scotia (cape breton to be exact). this organization does

all the logistics (B&B reservations, transport bags from town to town, provide maps, etc.) for several

destinations (they will do it for a group as small as 2 people)

Also - I am considering www.carolinatailwinds.com  for SC or Virginia options as well (cheaper than canada)

Hi Gayle,

I just got back from Italy.  What part of Italy will you be visiting?  You can rent bikes right at the Florence main train station and other areas in the city. There are lots of options for bike tours as well.  Also for Milan, there's lots of locations to rent bikes in that city as well, check out www.bikemi.com.  Hope this helps.
