A Crystal Lake man died Monday after his bicycle collided with a sport utility vehicle as he tried to cross a highway in the northwest suburb, police said.

Gordon McClain, 67, was dead on the scene following the crash about 5:45 p.m. Monday on U.S. Route 14 near Illinois Route 31, according to a release from Crystal Lake Police.

McClain was riding his bicycle, crossing Route 14 south from the north shoulder, when he collided with the driver's side of a 2012 Nissan Murano SUV that was headed east on Route 14, according to police. McClain hit the car and was thrown to the pavement, said Crystal Lake Police Commander Derek Hyrkas. McClain, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered severe head injuries, although it was not certain whether he hit his head on the car or the pavement, Hyrkas said.

McClain was dead on the scene.

The road was closed for about three hours while police investigated. The driver, a 48-year-old Aurora woman, was not cited, although police and the McHenry County coroner's office are still investigating, police said.

So sad. Rt. 14 and Rt. 31 are dangerous enough by car....let alone attempting that intersection by bike :(
