Lion VS Gorilla (LVG) is an ongoing curatorial initiative with a mission of encouraging collaboration, fostering community, and challenging barriers between artists and viewers; we see artists and viewers as partners in aesthetic experiences. Version is an annual springtime arts festival that brings together hundreds of artists, musicians, and educators form around the world to present some of the most challenging ideas and progressive art initiatives of our day. This year, LVG is partnering with Version to create Bridgeport Day, scheduled for May 12th, 2012.
Bridgeport Day is a celebration of the diverse communities that make up the neighborhood, and it includes a parade and a block party. For The Bridgeport Day Parade, community members will come together to make floats, decorate bikes, and create kites, and local school bands will be invited to march and play. At the end of the parade, the Bridgeport Day Block Party will begin. There will be a cook-off, a hotdog-eating competition*, games for children and families, art/sound/video/pop-up architecture installations, a charity fundraiser, and dance and musical performances. It will be a fun, relaxed day where neighbors can meet, talk, mingle, and celebrate the neighborhood.
If you're interested in being part of Bridgeport Day, there are many ways to participate!
We are looking for artists/creative/community members to use Bridgeport as a medium to imagine the community of the future. Specifically:
• People to participate in all phases of construction of mobile sculptural objects, from floats to decorated bikes to kites or anything you can imagine.
• Independent projects (art, sound, or video installations; performance pieces; pieces to enhance the atmosphere of the block party; pieces for the parade; anything from posters to actual structures; any thoughtful public space hacks; pop-up architecture; decorated or re-constructed bikes, etc.)
• Musicians, dancers, performers; but please, no circus arts. I'm thinking of you, flame-throwers. Yeah, you. Safety first.
• In the most ideal of worlds, we would love to have a Bridgeport Song. If you feel inspired to make one, let us know.
We welcome as much cross-collaboration as possible, and are open to ideas to enhance the spirit of the day.
To participate in Bridgeport Day, please send samples of your work, along with how you would like to contribute to Bridgeport Day to:lionvsgorilla@gmail.com. Submissions are due by March 30th. As this is a curated event, submission does not guarantee inclusion in Bridgeport Day. Sorry!
We look forward to hearing from you!
