Also he thinks he's put about 1200-1600 miles on it. Only used on long rides.
My first thought would be: $2500 frame; $1000 groupo; $500-600 wheels; low miles; $1000 sale price; I wonder if it's stolen?
ask the seller if you could bring it to a local bike shop to have the condition checked. Price is fair for a 5-6 yr old carbon bike... Make sure there are no cracks in the carbon and take it for a good test ride. 1200 miles in 6 yrs?? check for cobwebs
look at www.roadbikereview.com to see if there is any feedback about this model
thanks for the feedback. i guess i can take that as assuming it isn't stolen, it's a hell of a deal. definitely will try to ride it first and ideally take it by a shop.
Depreciation on 5+ year old carbon, especially bonded alu+carbon frames such as this, is very steep. This is not to say it's a bad bike; in fact, for the right rider -- these are lovely frames, with an extremely soft and supple ride compared with monocoque carbon.

That said, what you will want to pay special attention to are the joints where the aluminum lugs are bonded (glued) to the carbon fiber tubes. You can't really do this visually, and it's tough to even notice problems when riding, but what you can do is test ride it and listen very closely for unrecognizable sounds. Also test the bike for handling, and directionality (ie pulling to one side).

Even new, these are not particularly stiff frames -- and are ideal for lighter riders who eschew out of the saddle climbing, hard sprinting, etc. in favor of even tempo style rides. These are very rewarding century bikes and are also surprisingly light for the year. In some respects, it's a dated design, first showing up around 1998 -- but it held up and sold well up until a few years ago.
