The Chainlink

I am going to be in Chicago for the summer living in Wilmette by Plaza Del Lago and working at 35 E Wacker.  Want to bike commute.  Route recs?  What about N. Lincoln > N. Wells?

Thanks!

This is the route I would probably use through Evanston southbound in the AM:

This is probably the route I would use NB in the PM:

I don't like riding on Sheridan Rd in Evanston much, but there is a wide sidewalk along Northwestern's campus.  There won't be too many students out in the early AM, but you might want to avoid it sometimes in the PM.

In Chicago, I like the routes recommended on the Chicago bike map:

I like your route. Similar to what I do myself. The only place I would do something significantly different is right at the Evanston/ Chicago line.  Howard Street is something I would not wish on anyone. Take South Street all the way to the lake. Southbound I usually slow down and use the sidewalk that goes right along the shore. Southbound Sheridan is edgy right there. And many mornings being right on the lake is just a delight. Northbound lanes of Sheridan not so bad but I'll still use the sidewalk if there are not too many walkers in sight. Then Eastlake Terrace 'til it ends and you have the choice of getting back on Sheridan or going a block west and then south on Greenview.

Conti 4000s have a stiffer casing  than I prefer but they roll forever w/o flats and they're fast. If you just kick the pedals hard that stretch of Sheridan mentioned above will feel a lot safer. Cars coming around the bends will have more time to see you if you roll at gp4000 speed.

I take the North Shore Trail on the west side of the channel to Devon. At Devon I cut across the channel and then go south a couple of blocks on Kedzie. At the intersection with Peterson is the head of the North Shore Channel Trail on the east side of the channel. I take that all the way to the end at Lawrence. I then cut back west a block or so to California. I take California south to Elston. I take Elston bike lane all the way to Milwaukee. Take the MKE protected bike lane to Kinzie, and Kinzie to Dearborn.

With the exception of a few blocks I ride all the way on a trail, bike lane, or protected bike lane. Given that Elston is a straight shot southwest I can move pretty quick.

But for the "best" ride in in terms of scenery, nothing compares to the LFP which I'll take on a whim.
