City Council Proclaims Chicago Buy Local First Week

The "Unwrap Chicago: Eat, Drink & Buy Local" campaign is getting started and to make it official, the city council passed a resolution. Here is an excerpt:

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 2nd day of November, 2011, do hereby proclaim the week of November 25, 2011 - December 4, 2011, as "Buy Local First Week" and encourage every citizen of Chicago to support Chicago's locally owned, independent businesses and choose the future we want to see with every purchase we make.

The Unwrap Chicago campaign is asking all Chicago households to pledge to shift at least $100 of planned holiday spending from chain stores to locally owned merchants. If every household did this, it would keep $25 million from leaking out of our local Chicago economy.
