It's that time again. Holiday parties create drunken drivers. Be careful out there.

The same rules of the road that apply to drivers also apply to riders; it is illegal to drive a car, truck, motorcycle or ride a bike while intoxicated. Be sensible out there.

Not exactly. DUI does not apply to bicyclists in Illinois: http://votewithyourfeetchicago.blogspot.com/2010/09/can-you-get-dui...

But yes, be sensible out there.

Another recent horrible and shocking story of a cyclist killing by a hit-and-run drunken driver from Orlando Florida.

Justice? I still don’t know.

While it is easy to understand the outrage some people may feel over what they see as a light sentence and what that ostensibly says about the value of the victim’s life and how that outrage can be directed at the courts, the judges and the prosecutors, this outrage directed at these targets often fails to take in a larger context.

I don’t know that putting Vais in jail for years would be productive. I don’t know that punishment as deterrence has been an effective strategy."

Putting Vais in jail for years would have been productive, because future DUI offenders would have the example of his sentence as deterrent to their activities.

We must always be on the alert when riding, but with the court's light sentence, is the onus now weighted more heavily on the cyclist?
