The Chainlink

The fifth annual Chicago urban Iditarod race is coming up in just over three weeks. For those of you who have seen or participated in any of the previous four, an explanation of this event is not necessary. For those of you who have no idea what Chiditarod is, an explanation won't do it justice.

In short it's a mobile food drive in the form of the Iditarod, except people replace the Huskies, themed shopping carts replace sleds, and bars replace watering holes. This results in over 500 costumed and increasingly intoxicated competitors scrambling through the streets of chicago with shopping carts decorated as telephone booths, the popemobile or chopped into low-riding and functional grills — for a good cause.

The ideal bike marshal is fun-loving yet responsible. The job includes patrolling routes in teams, ensuring that any sabotage or cheating is done fairly, and public drinking is done covertly. Our word is law when it comes to judging and disqualifying, so in addition to the advantage of watching this event unfold from the perspective of your saddle, bike marshals are also often bribed.

The volunteer meeting is in less than three weeks on Wednesday, March 3. But people need to sign up soon so we can plan accordingly! Click on the following link and check Mobile Bike Marshal under preferred role — unless you somehow find another role more appealing:

I was probably the only person here who was ignorant of the date. But just in case that is not true, it looks like the event will happen on March 6, 2010.
Ha, yes. Saturday March 6, 2010. From roughly 10:00 am through 4:00 pm, but the party continues well into the evening.
