Highland Park has been approached to be a part of the expansion of car sharing beyond the City, Evanston and Oak Park.  There will be presentations at the Highland Park Transportation Commission meeting on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 6:30 at Highland Park City Hall.  Would you use a car share in Highland Park? If so, we'd like to hear from you.  Please attend the meeting or submit comments here that I will share at the meeting.  Thanks!

I like the idea in general of car sharing, i'm slightly skeptical that it would take off in Highland Park.  I guess the devil is in the details.  I'm guessing that these car share programs do better in areas where there are renters, younger people, high population density,  and parking struggles.  I'm not sure HP has the same sort of demographics as Oak Park, Evanston, or the city.  I don't think our downtown has too many renters.  There also I think tends to be very high property values downtown.  I don't really imagine people with $400,000 - 1.2 million condos doing car sharing.  Maybe car sharing is a way to attract a younger crowd though and they should not think about who is there who might use it, but who might come to highland park because its there...

It would be a pilot project to see if it works.  Structurally, with the train and pedestrian oriented downtown, HP is a good place to give it a try.  Perhaps some of the people who live in the condos/apts near downtown HP would consider becoming single car families if there were a car share available.  Also, people who work in HP and take the train here could get to daytime meetings beyond walking distance.  It would also help attract a younger crowd.  I'm looking for input from people with more experience with car sharing.  Does this make sense?
