Calling all bikers that live and ride in the Pilsen/Chinatown/University Village areas!

Hey there,


I'm working on a piece about the new protected bike lanes that will be installed soon on 18th Street in an effort to better connect the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Chinatown and University Village.

 

I'd like to interview some bikers who live in these communities about their thoughts on 1) what it's like to bike in these neighborhoods now 2) the pros and cons of protected bike lanes 3) how Chicago is faring on its way to becoming "the most bike-friendly city in the country" as Mayor Emanuel has promised.

1) Not bad, the worst problem I see is people riding the wrong way in bike lanes.

2) Pro: It's a nice idea. Seems like a good way to avoid getting doored. Con: Often the "protection" part is voided by those that wish to park their vehicle in the lane. Might result in more neglect for road maintenance (faded paint, potholes)

3) I think the bicycle is the best way to get around Chicago. People are respectful for the most part. Many motorists and cyclists need to be better about sharing the road.
