The Chainlink

On a recent trip to the Netherlands [where I fell in love with the bike culture], I used a bike that stopped not by the usual handle-brakes but by pushing back on the pedals, like a lot of kids' bikes.  This got me nostalgic for the bike I had when I was little and then got me thinking about other stuff in my past which I loved but are no longer.

My inquiry about what you miss from childhood and wish you could experience now as an adult is the Gapers Block topic of the week, if anyone wants to weigh in.  Would love to hear your thoughts!

good topic :

attaching baseball cards to the spokes with clothespins to make it sound like we were riding motorcycles.

now we put the cards INTO the spokes and they are silent.

Also - I had a paper route at age 11 where I delivered papers via bike (with a huge shoulder bag).
guess I was a courier and didn't even know it.

I miss going to going to record stores, the kind that had a big selection of 33 RPM albums, 45 RPM singles, 12 inches, cassettes and even CDs. Some, like Musicland, were in malls, and even that was pretty cool. Some were funky headshop type places with blacklight Led Zeppelin posters and shady characters - that was definitely cool. People used to go to these places, hang out, and get geeked out talking about music. It was a 'third place' kinda like a bar or coffee shop. You could buy great albums with actual cover art and collect the ones you really liked. I still have my original copy of the Sugarhill Gang's 12" of 'Rapper's Delight.' This whole phenomenon has gone the way of the dinosaur.
Ditto on the Legos Adriana! I also miss playing sports in the middle of our street until it was too dark to see by the street lights.
+1 on Legos and climbing trees. I miss a lot from back in the day. Slot cars, go karts and minibikes, jumping the dirt ramps at my friend's house on our bmx bikes, riding bikes around the lake to the ice cream shop, baseball, football, and golf in my parents' backyard and the park down the street, and dragging the rowboat into the lake to fish and swim.

Also, I just realized how much of my time was spent fixing bikes and go karts. Most of the neighborhood kids hung out in my parents' garage some days waiting their turn.
Climbing trees, light posts or what I could climb up. I was probably a monkey in my past life!

Also, playing with matchbox cars, making forts out of the couch cushins and playing cowboys and indians.
I miss those days in early June, counting down the last weeks of school, and looking forward to half-day early dismissal! The summer felt like it would go on for six months, and now it is here and gone and we barely notice due to work, taxes, etc.. And I miss skidding on my big-wheel!
I miss how big jungle gyms used to be to me.
I miss all the fun park district classes my parents would buy for me.
I miss running around naked on the beach.
I miss being carried.
