The Chainlink

Day One:

  • Yummy Caribou(?) coffee and Cliff bars -NOM!
  • Sweet hydration bottles filled with fliers and goodies (no stickers though, unfortunately.)
  • Nice people and a handy mechanic to lend a helping hands to those who might need it.
  • XRT/ATA/MoS&I-branded cuff clip (although both mine and my wife's fell off the first half mile after the pit stop :(  I think we need some training on how to put these things on.  I'm used to the old-fashioned velcro-type.

Not too bad!

Kinzie is not yet finished all the way to Wells.  It's only the first 1/4-mile East of Milwaukee and then it is back to the same-old same-old bumper-car course.

Right now they are talking about BTW week on WBEZ.  It'll be a good week.

Was a great ride in.  Saw lots of bikes and everyone I saw was behaving well.  From bike parking options in the Loop, looks like lots of people are participating; good!
I always appreciate the swag at these pit stops.  I've lost so many water bottles, but I've never had to buy one thanks to events like this.  Fingers crossed for the '312' seat covers they were handing out last year.

If I could find what I did with my 312 seat cover I'd trade it for one of the nice vecro and blazing yellow-green wickerparkbucktown pantsleg cinches.   It's probably in one of my many boxes of nearly feral bike parts unless it has gone completely free-roaming.

I just use a plastic grocery baggie.  It packs up in the nose of the seat and does a better job of keeping water off the bottom of the Brooks.

I think I can hit three of the AM stops on Thursday.  Fullerton, North Wells, and Museum.

Gonna tell of the spoils...

I can't say the thought of hitting multiple pit stops each day for extra swaggage didn't cross my mind too...
Had a nice chat with Ruth Meyers from Active Trans about starting a bike committee in West Chicago at the Wheaton Metra stop. I was hoping to see more bikers though.

Day 2:

The Lime-green ankle strap seems to be made of 'stronger stuff" than the orange ones my wife and I got yesterday that promptly fell off of both of us withing the first half mile.    Maybe it is just my imagination since I dont' have any way of measuring it other than the fact that the Yellow one didn't fall off yet while the orange one has on the same pants (yeah, I'm a guy -and don't always put on clean pants every day.  I'm saving wash water ;)  Maybe I'm getting better at putting it on.

Keep missing the neat swag stuff- my route doesn't take me near REI  or Halsted, nor does it take me to Kinzie and Wells which seems to be popular now- and Monday I got a flat in the morning on the way and had to take an alternative means to work and fix the flat at my office during lunch, so I missed the one on Wells (I think there was one on Wells yesterday). I am hoping to be able to stop for a pit stop on the way tomorrow, as I think the next planned pit stop is on Wednesday (if I read the chalk markings on the bike lane correctly) and will be at Wells and Lincoln or thereabouts, which is perfect for my commute.  I bike to work all year round and wish they had these pit stops every day and not just for one week- maybe suggest a bike to work month?
Here is a great roundup of the events and pit stops this week so one can plan their route.
Last night Iggi was determined to get a bike chicago t-shirt at goose island. He got off his train early and road 20-30 min with a metal pipe on his top tube and some baby seedlings on the side of his bag to meet me there. I think he earned his t-shirt
I was there too, I didn't see you guys... I did get there late and left early though.
