Brrrrrrrrr-fect day for a ride on the Near West Side
Bike Tour of Near West Side of Chicago Tomorrow.
Tomorrow, Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 1:00 PM we are conducting a brand new Chicago Neighborhood Bike Tour, exploring Chicago’s Near West Side with stops and discussions about its history and architecture. Should be a lovely day for it, considering it is a sliding scale compared to today.....man! it's cold!
Come join us for a brand new tour of one of the most interesting areas in terms of history, diversity, and built environment. Tours are always done at a relaxed pace with narration about the area and the tour stops. We’ll meet up at Union Park in the heart of the Near West Side, an area that factors heavily in the formation of Chicago as we know it, and is the site of the origins of the Chicago Fire, the Haymarket Riot, and a wealth of beautiful built history remaining to help tell the stories of how the community was formed, and the history of its residents. The tour will visit many architecturally significant sites including the Old Main Post Office, Union Station, the University of Illinois at Chicago and Medical Triangle, Hull House, the Church of the Epiphany, St. Ignatius Preparatory College and many others. The tour is narrated and will last 4 to 5½ hours and is approximately 16 miles in length. All riders must wear a helmet. Layer up for a cold ride as we mush on in any weather.

We also have a pre-ride this evening at 5:00 PM to test the route. Should be......coldrific! Here's the skinny on the pre-ride. Don't forget, if you do that and agree to help marshal the ride on Saturday, you get free entry.
We will also have posters and t-shirts with Ross Felten's bike tour art available for the first time ever this Saturday at the ride. Hope to see some of you out there. Please identify yourself beneath your layers. You could lie if you like, even though it is a bit early.

Wasn't the last ride torrential rains and 33 degree weather?
What's next? Widely scattered frogs and locusts? Something even more biblical?

I try to save the frogs for spring.
It has been said that if a farming community has long suffered drought and are in terrible peril, their best bet is to have me schedule a bike tour of their farms as soon as possible.
