Heritage Bicycles General Store - Chicago

I heard a rumor that Bowery Lane Bicycles was going to open up a shop in Chicago and has started fabricating frames in Chicago.

 

This rumor was started by me :)

Is this going to be a coffee shop serving Stumptown coffee in addition to being a bike shop?

Coffee Shop/ Bike Shop.

 

Stumptown Coffee and Espresso, P & H Soda, pastries, and once we get our incidental we will be serving locally brewed beers. 

Bike assembly will be happening in the back of the shop for all to see along with some light repairs.

Let me see if I get this. Tell me if I 'm wrong.

 

So it's called Heritage Bicycles, Chicago branch of Bowery Bikes in NYC, it'll have a coffee and maybe beer bar with a guy welding in the back space, and the bikes are "Dutch inspired" with a Worksman/cruiser like rear triangle (bent seat stays). They'll use American steel. The prices of the ones in Brooklyn seem to be $600 - $800 or so. Neat! Does anyone know if they use American thinwall CrMo (TrueTemper or something) or plain American tempered steel? Whose dropouts are they using, or is it stamped and cut pipe? Any idea about gearing options? Who makes the wheels?

 

How will these be different than Bubbly Bicycle Works or other local builders products?

 

And when will they have a Bakfiets cargobike copy ready?

 

I'm really looking forward to the opening. When is it?

Heritage Bicycles, sister company of Bowery Lane. There is no financial relationship. I started BLB with some friends in NYC and have been itching to bring the same kind of concept, locally made bicycles, back to Chicago where I am from.**

 

**I should note that there are plenty of amazing frame builders here in Chicago, some are much much better than us.

 

We will have a cafe in the front of the shop, serving Stumptown coffee and food from a local spot (which is still being negotiated). 

 

Our welder is off site- no way the city is letting us toss in welding where people are eating not to mention we dont have enough room. We will have a bike room where the assembly and tune ups will be happening by our friends over at West Town.

 

Bikes- We will have the new line of bikes from Bowery Lane (not worksman) in the shop along with a new line of bikes from Heritage Bicycles.  

 

Dropouts - Surly

 

Gears - 1, 2 (kickback), 3, 5, 7

 

Working on some front-loader bikes for next summer...keep you posted

One question on the coffee. Why Stumptown coffee and not something roasted in Chicago like Dark Star or Asado?  Or Metropolis?

While in NYC I had built a relationship with the Stumptown crew and I really like what they are doing and think the coffee is fantastic. The Chicago roasters are awesome too, but can only pick one.

I suggest Fritz Pastry for the cafe goodies.  They're located not far away (Southport and Diversey) and make some excellent pastries.

 

Incidentally, they also supply the Gaztro Wagon and Intelligentsia stores.
