I got new Bogs boots for winter because a few people said they were awesome. I got a size bigger than I wear and they seem insanely big. I'm wearing a smartwool sock which is medium thick.  I gotta say, I feel like I'm wearing my dad's shoes. Those in favor of boots that are a size too big--really? This is weird. I do have to walk in these.

Too big is too big. If you wear the sock you want to wear, and your heel still pulls up or your foot slides forward and your toes hit, that would drive me nuts.

I bought a pair of non bulky, semi-water proof boots for the winter and contemplated buying a size up.  Good thing I didn't.  Somehow, these don't feel anywhere near too big when I'm wearing anywhere from no socks to really thick acorn versa socks.

I think a better idea than sizing up would be to just buy your normal sized, insulated boot, and think about buying a pair of windproof/waterproof shoe covers.  Although I'm kind of a noob to the whole winter biking thing, shoes are shoes, and too big or too small is not good, imo.

Going to test them today. Got them at REI. Returnable when worn for members. (I'm a member and I still feel guilty about returning worn stuff.) They do seem too big in every way, but it's not uncomfortable or painful, just annoying.

I'd really like to solve my footwear problems someday. (Sigh.)

Are these the socks you will be wearing mid winter?

Did you try them after standing on your feet for a few hours? Feet tend to swell up during the day.

If so, I'd return them/exchange them. The site say returns are free.

That is why I stick with laced shoes as compared to boots. They are more adjustable than boots. And a good shoe can be just as waterproof as a boot

I'll be walking dogs from now until 4. That should be a good test, not for riding, but for walking at least. I'm guessing these are not going to work.

I've personally never really believed in the whole "buy a size up" idea.  It seems most shoes are already designed with the type of sock you would likely wear with them in mind, meaning I've found winter/rain boots already tend to be cut a little more forgivingly to fit thick wool socks.  My actual shoe size has always worked for me in regular boots and winter cycling shoes.

I realize it's all obviously personal, though.  I also never double up on socks and have fairly warm feet through the winter, unlike some people who have cold feet problems and advocate going for the extra room so layering socks (which is what adds the bulk) is an option.

Holly,

No need to feel guilty. We appreciate your business, and want to make sure that you end up in the right gear. After trying them out, if you are not satisfied with them, bring them back and we will do our best to make sure that we find somthing that will work for you.

enjoy!

Elliot--thanks for absolving me of my guilt! It's a really generous policy and I appreciate it. I will have to return the boots as yesterday was not good--had to come home and change footwear after 2 hours.
